2019: Women and Beauty
The relativism of modern times has left man confused and anxious. The culture resounds with the skeptical question "what is truth?" and an understanding of the good is something best kept to oneself. Under such circumstances, the power of beauty, "as a glimmer of the Spirit of God," has the task of "opening the human soul to the sense of the eternal." (“Letter to Artists,” 28) Of the three transcendentals, truth, goodness, and beauty, beauty may be the most effective aid to awaken man’s soul to the goodness and truth he yearns to find in a culture pervaded by relativism.
Beauty, however, "is mysterious as well as terrible. God and the devil are fighting there and the battlefield is the heart of man.” (The Brothers Karamazov) Beauty can illuminate the path toward man’s final end, but it can also be a tool for confusion and temptation.
What, then, is the difference between beauty that is illusory and deceitful and beauty that enlightens? What is true, authentic beauty? Finally, what special role do women play in bringing this beauty to the world; a world that is in such desperate need of it?
