This past Tuesday, September 27, Ave Maria University and Genuine Feminine Alumna Lilly Bozzone returned to campus to offer young women her insight on the Fashion Personalities. The evening began with sushi, wine, and fellowship before Lilly spoke about the following:
Why is style important? Why should we care? Style is a form of communication and self-expression. Our outer appearance reflects how we feel on the inside. It tells others something about ourselves by externalizing the internal. Furthermore, style celebrates body and soul. Our bodies manifest our souls, and fashion aids this manifestation. In effect, our clothes reflect the person God made us to be.
Before discussing fashion personality, we must make the distinction between “fashion” and “style.” Style is personal. It taps into our inner life and brings the internal out. Fashion, however, is a form of art. Mary Sheehan Warren, personal fashion consultant and author of It’s So You, used the term “Fashion Personality” to explain that the unique character of each woman is conveyed through her choice of style. Fashion personality is deeply psychological. When we enter our favorite clothing store, we naturally gravitate toward one essence over another. Stop for a moment and ask yourself why you consistently choose one look instead of the others, why you feel an internal pull toward a particular trend.
Your fashion personality reflects your actual personality. Understanding your fashion personality helps you tap into and explore the woman you already are. This understanding helps, primarily, in an internal way by expressing your personal and actual tastes. In addition, choosing clothes which align with your personality will improve your shopping experience, save you money, boost your self-esteem, allow you to enjoy the clothes you buy, and assist you in becoming the best version of yourself.
If you are anxious to discover your own fashion personality, go ahead and take this quiz: http://www.isyfashion.com/fashionpersonality.html. The quiz will categorize you into one of four fashion personalities—either Romantic, Classic, Relaxed, or Expressive—based on the majority of your answers. Keep in mind, you are never simply one category. Just as each of us has a unique actual personality, we each have a unique fashion personality. As a result, your fashion choices will be a mixture of Romantic, Classic, Relaxed, and Expressive in a combination which is entirely your own.
To define your style, create a profile which will serve as your base. Build your profile on the following questions: What three words describe what you want your look to portray? What do you want your style to convey about who you are? What or who inspires you? What items do you gravitate towards or repeatedly wear?
Once you have established a base, begin to develop and explore your fashion personality. Create a “vision board” composed of clothing images you like from blogs, magazines, and stylish Instagrammers. Determine what specific items you want in your
wardrobe. Don’t be scared to wear those items. Try them out. See how you feel in them. Most importantly, as you are on your quest to discover your fashion personality, BE PATIENT. Your fashion personality is a reflection of your inner life, which is much more complicated than merely taking a quiz and finding a few images. Just as your interior life is constantly unfolding, changing, and manifesting itself to you, your exterior life will constantly blossom, evolve, and at times surprise you. Enjoy your journey!
